Redirect & HTTP Checker

Follow a URL through every redirect and see each step's HTTP status code, where it points next, how long it took and where it finally lands. Useful after a site move, when switching to HTTPS, or to check that old links and campaign URLs still reach the right page.

How to use it

  1. Paste the URL to test. Type http:// at the start if you want to check your HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect.
  2. Press Check redirects.
  3. Read the chain from top to bottom: each step shows its status code with a plain-English meaning, its URL and the address it points to.
  4. Check the final URL and status, then read the notes for temporary redirects, long chains or errors.
  5. Copy the chain as text or download a CSV to share with whoever manages the site.

How the chain is followed

  • Requests are sent from BrandNXT's server with a “BrandNXT-Tools” user agent, using GET, without cookies or sign-in details.
  • A response with status 301, 302, 303, 307 or 308 and a Location header is followed to the next URL, up to 10 redirects. The check stops if a URL repeats (a redirect loop) or the limit is reached, and shows the steps completed before that.
  • Each step waits up to 10 seconds for a response, and only the first 16 KB of each response is downloaded. The time shown is how long that response took from BrandNXT's server.
  • Every step's address is checked again before it's requested: only public http(s) sites on ports 80 and 443 are contacted, and private, local and internal addresses are refused.
  • Notes flag more than one redirect in a row, temporary redirects (302 or 307), HTTP to HTTPS redirects, a final page on plain HTTP and a final status of 400 or above.
  • Only HTTP redirects are followed. Redirects made with JavaScript or a meta refresh tag inside the page aren't. Nothing is stored.
