XML Sitemap Generator

Turn a list of your page URLs into a valid XML sitemap. Paste URLs or upload a .txt or .csv file, and the tool validates and de-duplicates them, adds optional lastmod dates and splits very large lists into several sitemaps with an index. It works only from your list: it doesn't crawl your site.

How to use it

  1. Paste one URL per line, or upload a .txt file or a .csv file with URLs in the first column.
  2. Choose how to treat trailing slashes, and optionally add lastmod: one date for every URL, or dates from the second column.
  3. Check the validation report: invalid lines and duplicates are left out, and URLs on other hosts are flagged.
  4. Download sitemap.xml, or a ZIP of numbered sitemaps plus a sitemap index if you have more than 50,000 URLs.
  5. Upload the files to your site, add a Sitemap line to robots.txt, and submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

How the sitemap is built

  • Each line (or the first CSV column) must be an absolute http:// or https:// URL on a public domain. #fragments are removed, spaces and non-ASCII characters are percent-encoded, and international domain names are written in punycode.
  • URLs are compared after normalising (lower-case host, plus your trailing-slash choice), and only the first copy of each is kept.
  • The host most URLs share is treated as your site. URLs on another host or protocol are kept but flagged, because a sitemap should cover a single host.
  • Output follows the sitemaps.org protocol: UTF-8, the http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9 namespace and XML-escaped URLs. Each file holds at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed; longer lists are split and listed in sitemap-index.xml.
  • lastmod accepts YYYY-MM-DD or a date and time with a time zone (W3C Datetime). Invalid and future dates are left out. changefreq and priority are optional, and Google ignores them.
  • Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is fetched from your site, so the tool can't check whether each URL loads, redirects or is marked noindex.
