How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. Read the counts. Each emoji, flag or accented letter counts as one character, as you see it.
  3. Check the platform limits table for how much you have used, how much remains and how far over you are.
  4. For SMS, check the encoding and number of segments, and replace any characters that force UCS-2 if you need to fit more in each message.

How counting works

  • Characters are grapheme clusters (what you see as one character), using the browser's Intl.Segmenter with a fallback. A family emoji, a flag or an emoji with a skin tone counts as 1.
  • Words are space-separated groups containing a letter or digit, so “well-known” is one word; each Chinese or Japanese character counts as a word. Sentences are approximate: text is split after . ! ? and at line breaks, so abbreviations like “Dr.” can add one.
  • The X count follows twitter-text's published settings: each link counts as 23, characters in U+0000–U+10FF, U+2000–U+200D, U+2010–U+201F and U+2032–U+2037 count as 1, and everything else, including each emoji, counts as 2, against 280.
  • Google Ads headline and description limits count double-width characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) as 2.
  • SMS: the GSM-7 alphabet allows 160 characters in one message and 153 per part when a message is split. ^ { } \ [ ~ ] | and € take 2. Any other character switches the whole message to UCS-2: 70 in one message, 67 per part.
  • Reading time is an estimate at 200 words per minute.
